An art movement that emerged in twentieth-century France and aimed to express the creativity of the unconscious mind through the juxtaposition of unrelated images, producing a dream-like, irrational quality. It gradually expanded to become an intellectual and political movement that was influenced by the psychological theories of Sigmund Freud and the political ideas of Karl Marx.
