Dalit community living primarily in India, with smaller populations in Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Nepal. Dalits are an aggregation of historically marginalised communities considered lowest in the Hindu caste hierarchy by virtue of their exclusion from it. In India, Chamars are a designated Scheduled Caste (SC) community, known by a variety of names across several states. Historically of diverse occupations, including agricultural labour, Chamars came to be identified with leatherwork in the nineteenth century, forming a significant presence in both artisanal and industrial sectors. In independent India, they have been at the forefront of political organisations working for the upliftment of marginalised groups in states such as Uttar Pradesh.
