A dynasty that ruled over areas of present-day Kerala and Tamil Nadu from c. second century BCE. There were multiple Chera kingdoms, some of which were later absorbed into Pallava rule. The earliest reference to the dynasty appears in Ashoka’s edicts, c. third century BCE. The dynasty began declining from c. fifth century CE onwards, but kings claiming Chera descent ruled in the area until the tenth– eleventh centuries CE.
