Literally meaning “string” or “thread,” it refers to literature from the ancient and medieval periods that was originally preserved and transmitted in the form of oral histories. Found in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism, such texts may cover a variety of subjects, including religious rituals and practices, religious teachings or the rules of grammar and syntax.
