A war fought between the independent kingdom of Kalinga and the Mauryan empire under Ashoka, which ended in 261 BCE, seven years after Ashoka’s coronation. It is believed to have been fought in the present-day Dhauli Hills, Odisha. It is the only major war fought by Ashoka and is said to have influenced his dedication to Buddhism and values of ahimsa (non-violence) and dharma-vijaya (victory through dharma).
