Krishna and the gopis on the bank of the Yamuna river, folio from the second or Tehri Garhwal Gita Govinda; India; c. 1775–80; Opaque watercolour and gold on paper; 16.2 x 25.7 cm. The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York

A group of women significant to the worship of the Hindu deity Krishna, especially when coupled with his consort Radha. Chiefly considered to be a group of 108 women, the gopis are associated with Braj, the site of Krishna’s youth, and are seen as idealised forms of the devoted bhakta (devotee), who combines their bhakti (devotion) with a spiritual love for Krishna.
