A landmark exhibition of contemporary art held in 1989 at the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris. Curated by John-Hubert Martin, it was one of the first international exhibitions to challenge prevalent Eurocentric attitudes to ‘ethnic’ art by ensuring that half the works on display featured non-western artists, whose works were shown individually rather than under geographic or ethnographic categories. Translates to “magicians of the Earth” in French.
