Established in 1952 and inaugurated in 1954, it is India’s National Academy of Letters, created for the promotion and preservation of literary works in the twenty four recognised Indian languages. It offers grants, conducts workshops and seminars, and recognises outstanding literary contributions through the annual Sahitya Akademi Award as well as other honours.
