Nalanda

A Buddhist monastic university in the ancient state of Magadha (in present-day Bihar), which was widely known as a centre of education and as one of world’s earliest residential universities. It was established during the rule of the Gupta Dynasty, with additional support from Buddhist and non-Buddhist patrons from India and Java. Subjects such as the philosophies of Buddhist schools as well as grammar, medicine and mathematics were taught at the university. It was destroyed during the invasion of Muhammad bin Bakhtiyar Khalji and later restored in part. It has since been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
