A title used by the emperor Ashoka to refer to himself, it derives from the Pali Devanampiya Piyadassi, meaning “He who regards others with kindness” or “He of beautiful mien”. The title is found inscribed on many of the major pillar and rock edicts of Ashoka from the third century BCE.
