Located in present-day Karnataka, it was a capital and coronation site of the Early Western Chalukyas. It is noted for its ten major temples, the earliest of which is Sangameshvara, built by Vijayaditya I (697–733 CE). The temples are largely Shaivite in iconography and feature a number of Deccan architectural elements as well as influences from northern and southern India. The site’s temples are considered influential to the development of Deccan temple architecture, with the Lokeshvara or Virupaksha temple in particular being studied for its influence on the Kailasanatha Temple in Ellora.
