The earliest extant Islamic script, historically preferred for use in the Quran. The calligraphic script is angular and slow-moving, with low vertical and extended horizontal lines that give it a geometric construction. It has local and regional variations and is also found in inscriptions on coins, tombstones and architectural monuments.
